About the Author

EIJI YOSHIKAWA was born in 1892 in Kanagawa Prefecture, near Tokyo. He began his literary career at the age of twenty-two. During his thirties he worked as a journalist while continuing to write stories and novels, reaching a large and appreciative readership through having his work published, often serially, in newspapers and popular magazines. At the time of his death in 1962, he was one of Japan's best-known and best-loved novelists. He received the Cultural Medal, the highest award for a man of letters, and other cultural decorations, including the Order of the Sacred Treasure.CHARLES S. TERRY, the translator, was born in Mississippi in 1926 and graduated from Duke University. He first studied Japanese in the U.S. Navy during WW II and after the war received a master's degree from Columbia University in Japanese history. Resident in Japan since 1952, he also received a master's degree in Chinese history from the University of Tokyo and has since been active as a translator of works on Japanese art, architecture and history. He died in 1982.

True masterpiece, unique in its kind, and superbly written. This is one of the few books which I've read in a long time that I didn't want the story to end. Despite seeming a dauntingly long and hefty novel, the story flows at a neckbreaking pace, full of surprises and clever plots at every turn. The book I would most compare it to is James Clavell's epic "Shogun", but besides the fact that both stories take place more or less in the same time period in Japan (beginning of Edo period), the comparison ends there. Whereas "Shogun" describes Japan from the eyes of a foreigner, and deals with high-court intrigues, Musashi's fictional story (albeit loosely based on events in his life including all his ill-fated duels) deals with the common day-to-day life in Japan, the peasantry, the samurai, the secret lives of Geishas and pleasure quarters, Buddhist priests and itinerant monks, of families torn by the everlasting conflicts that was raging between North and South daimyo factions at that time (Osaka vs Edo courts), the tribulations of ronin who were left masterless after the battle of Sekigahara and who were roaming the country incessantly in search of odd jobs or who would become evil doers. Such a man was Musashi, who being on the losing side of the Sekigahara battle, started a life long wandering journey throughout Japan, perfecting his sword techniques and becoming, slowly, the most prestigious swordsman of all time. Although the book only recounts 12 years of this journey, these were without doubt his formative years, and the characters he meets, loves or fights with along the way all edge him, little by little, towards achieving his goal, the Way of the Sword. Every encounter Musashi goes through is a lesson of life and death, something that even we, as readers, can apply in our daily lives centuries later. It's timeless advice.The second thing I thoroughly enjoyed about the book was the translation. The way the story flows, the vocabulary used as well as the dialogues are very well rendered to the point where I was actually believing the text to be written originally in English. There's also quite a lot of light-hearted, downright comical dialogues, which give the story a lighter tone despite the somber aspect and seriousness of the background story. I actually wonder if this is the work of the translator (by the mere fact that eastern languages are not always easy to transpose into western ones) or if Eiji Yoshikawa himself inserted those funny passages. In any case, this novel was a hidden gem that I would highly recommend to anyone looking for brilliant historical fiction or simply who wants to learn more about Japanese culture during the Edo period.

I don't make this claim lightly, but it's true: Musashi has immediately leaped into my top-5 all-time favorite books. It's simultaneously a rip-roaring, romantic warrior epic, a philosophical meditation on the pursuit of a worthy life, and also a guidebook on how to be great, truly great, at anything. The power of this novel is subtle because it's so incredibly easy to read; in fact, it's probably the easiest 900-page book in existence. Yet that's also what makes it so great, as "naturalness," one might say, is the lesson Musashi spends his whole life learning. In this way the novel is incredibly deep, without ever once being difficult to read.Really...I love this book. I'm going to make my kids read this book. I'm giving it out as Christmas gifts. It's a book I know I'll be reading again, over and over, for a very long time.

probably the greatest book written on the samurai. it helps that he was a real person. not for the faint of heart, this book is over 1000 pages long. I've read it four times now and could easily read it again. One of Japan's greatest hero's, this story is about his life and beliefs. A must read for anyone interested in Japanese culture and lifestyle.

I'm only on page 300. The book gives you an idea of how it was like in Japan around the 1600s. The characters are great and he puts time in developing each one from chapter to chapter. Book also teaches life lessons. Early in the book musashi was dissappointed that his friend was defeated by a thot. It showed me how a good warrior can easily fall to a woman who throws himself at him. Nothing can prepare you for a thot attack. You just gotta be mentally strong. To be a great martial artist, you must not only train physically but you must also strenthen your mind and your spirit. Thats real and hits home. Great read.

While reading this novel, you are immediately pulled into feudal Japan in an unexpected manner. You see the story play out in your head as a manga, a graphic novel, and as a Classic Japanese samurai movie, complete with comic relief characters. Then you realize that this novel predates those forms of entertainment and you're left shaking your head at the mastery of the author who pens the story of another master, the man who became greatest samurai in history. I highly recommend this book. It's a rare vintage that should sipped and savored, but fortunately, comes in a cask so we can't gulp it down in one (or three) sittings.

In 2015, David Platt published Counter Culture, a call for Christians not to conform to the world's views on a variety of issues, but to let their actions conform to the attitudes and teaching of Jesus and the Bible. In this 2017 revised and updated version, Counter Culture: Following Christ in an Anti-Christian Age, he revisits much of the same content while adding relevant insights about current trends. At the time he was first writing the book, "the Supreme Court was about to consider arguments concerning same-sex marriage, and transgender sexuality was rarely even discussed. Two short years later, so-called same-sex marriage has become law across the country, and the federal government now threatens to withhold children's education money from states who do not allow men who wish they were women to use public bathrooms alongside young girls."As you can perceive from this selection, Platt is an unabashed conservative who holds to traditional Christian morality. But Counter Culture is more than a simple "what conservatives believe" pamphlet. As Platt delves into the scriptural foundation for each of the stances he takes in the book, he gives a very personal spin. On each issue he tells how he has struggled to follow Christ's example. Further, he helps the reader by ending each chapter with steps to pray--suggestions for prayer time, to participate--ways the reader can be involved, and to proclaim--scriptures to mediate on regarding the issue of the chapter.Overall, Platt maintains a very positive tone. He offers the hope of the gospel for those involved in sexual sin, for those struggling with materialism or poverty, for those in slavery. The weight of the issues he discusses began to feel very heavy, and our response, inadequate. But as he reminds us, "God alone is able to bear these global burdens." In his grace, he allows us to participate in his work.His new chapter, which covers the current refugee crisis, seemed especially weighty. Platt makes it personal, narrating the tale of families fleeing from war-ravaged Syria. As we try to imagine what it would be like to live in their shoes, we can't help but wonder what we might do. While Platt's presentation is particularly effective, it also reveals a weakness of his approach. He's right that we need to pray, and that refugees are especially in need of the saving knowledge of Jesus. And of course the material needs are tremendous. The problem is transitioning to the public policy realm. Given the need, does the United States have an obligation to assist 60 million refugees? To welcome them into our country? What if the expense is more than we can bear? And is there any logistical possibility of resettling all those in need? I'm not sure Platt has a great answer.Even when he might fall short on policy recommendations, throughout Counter Culture, Platt never fails to keep the focus on Christ and the hope we have in him. We all have sinned, and are guilty of following culture on some or all of the issues he addresses. As we live to counter culture, we live to follow Christ. And as we do so, we recognize that the point is not to transform culture by focusing on these issues, but "by giving our lives to gospel proclamation--to telling others the good news of all God has done in Christ and calling them to follow him."Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the complimentary electronic review copy!

Until a dear friend recommended this book, I was unfamiliar with David Platt’s writings. This is not meant to seem trite or trivial, but prior to reading I noticed that two of his sons are named Joshua and Caleb. As an old Marine, it made me think: “Okay, this guy is a warrior.” And once into the book I noticed several Isaiah 5:20-type references, only to recall his third son is named Isaiah, making the impression complete.“Counter Culture” is an amazing work. It is at once convicting and disturbing, yet irresistible. Platt boldly proclaims biblical truth as few are today willing to. In most of the chapters I was made to view the huge planks in my eyes before seeing the evil and injustice beyond in my own narrow view. CC is a Christian call to action with eternal focus. Simply superb.

Dr. Platt is an incredible communicator! His books, his videos and postings, all direct our eyes and hearts towards true, realistic discipleship. Following Jesus is not going to happen in the lives of those who seek to be comfortable, safe, or entitled. And certainly those who want to live in immorality, greed, deceit, or idolatry will not appreciate the truth spoken by Dr. Platt. But for those who follow Jesus with abandon, who have died to self that they might live in Him, this book holds amazing promise.

This is a well written, easily understood book on very difficult and controversial topics which cannot be ignored.David Platt presents God's Word, filled with timeless truths, as the final authority for determining how we live our lives as followers of Christ. He makes clear that we must be "consciously countercultural" in contemporary America with both grace, strength and the accompanying risk when we do so. It is a call to move forward, not retreat.This book should challenge its reader to further study and discussion.

Oh my word! If you are soft-hearted, have a box of tissues available when you read this. What a heart-breaking but inciting message to get out there and DO for Christ!!!! This should be mandatory reading in every Christian church.

If you wonder if it's you, or if you congregation seems to have the same values as the culture, this book is for you. If you and your church aren't committed to being "counter-cultural" you will succumb to your culture; and become meaningless. This is a great book to help you get back on track and confront the mission of the church. David Platt is very realistic in his evaluations. Great read. You need to read "Radical: Taking Back Your Faith From The American Dream," by David Platt as well. (I do not work for David Platt - it just sounds like it.)

An excellent text book

In order to appreciate this book, one must understand the history behind power system protective relaying. As the previous reviewers have mentioned, the two classic bibles in protective relaying is the Westinghouse Protective Relaying book and the Westinghouse T & D book. Lewis Blackburn put the former book together while he worked at Westinghouse and he had a hand in the second book as well. My father attended the Westinghouse training courses in the 1950's and his instructor was Lew Blackburn. Over time, Mr. Blackburn became a family friend and I grew up listening to them talk about the electric power industry and learned about the subject at the feet of the master. Even though I went into motors instead of relaying, I still enjoyed reading this book.After Mr. Blackburn retired from Westinghouse, he became a consultant and proceeded to put the material in this book together. It was a labor of love, for a lot of people have said that the practice of protective relying is like black magic because there are many correct ways to protect a system, they all have problems but it is up to the practitioner to determine the best solution for a given situation. Mr. Blackburn poured his years of experience and expertise into this book. He tried to do this in a systematic manner in order to reduce the amount of ambiguity usually associated with the black arts. I believe he has succeeded.I would agree with the others that the second edition was a letdown from the first, but then again, most first editions are more informative because authors wrote "their" book with the first edition, the following editions are ususally to answer the critics and publishers.

This book gets five stars due to the fact that it was written by Blackburn who is the most respected name in relaying. He has a number of chapters in the Westinghouse relaying book which is one of the "bibles" of the discipline. Protective Relaying is generalized so can be applied to all types/manufacturers of relays. It should be on the shelf of every protection engineer.This book is a little difficult for someone new to the discipline as well as being wordy regarding explanation of principles. It is generally the first book I grab off the shelf to start reviewing a protection topic or to refresh my memory. Blackburn did an excellent job with straight forward practical examples and applications...as you might expect from one of the masters in the field. This book along with the old Westinghouse Applied Protective Relaying book (relaying Bible) and the ABB T&D book (formerly Westinghouse book) cover the majority of topics a protection enginerd needs.

I have been using this book from 1st edition up to the third and it provides both a theoretical and application background so the reader can use it as the base to go for more specific info or for manufacturers applications guides.

About the Author

Brock LaMeres joined the Montana State ECE faculty in July of 2006. He received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Colorado, Boulder in December of 2005, his MSEE from the University of Colorado, Colorado Springs in May of 2001, and his BSEE from Montana State University, Bozeman in December of 1998. LaMeres teaches and conducts research in the area of digital systems with particular emphasis on exploiting reprogrammable fabrics to deliver more effective computer systems. LaMeres is also studying how engineering education can be improved using innovative e-learning environments. LaMeres has published over 70 manuscripts and 3 textbooks in the area of high speed digital systems. LaMeres has also been granted 13 US patents in the area of digital signal propagation. LaMeres is a Senior Member of IEEE and a Registered Professional Engineer in the States of Montana and Colorado. Dr. LaMeres is a member of AESS, ASEE and serves as the faculty advisor of the student branch of IEEE at MSU. Prior to coming to MSU, Dr. LaMeres worked as an R&D engineer for Agilent Technologies in Colorado Springs, CO from 1999 to 2006. LaMeres was a hardware design engineer in the Logic Analysis R&D lab. He designed acquisition hardware for the 16910/11/12 and 16950 Logic Analyzer systems in addition to developing a variety of probing solutions.

This book lays out the concepts and uses of VHDL better than any other textbook of its kind. It's easy to follow and one of the rare textbooks that are easy to read. It's not just page after page of dry technical reading. If you're looking for a book to learn VHDL this is the one to buy.

Chapter 1 to Chapter 3: Lot of emphasis is given by the authors to cover the basic fundamentals required for the design. Chapter 1 to 4 has the many concept check examples and exercises with meaningful questions. But still it lacks the practicality and clarity of explanation. The application of the logic gates and the practical scenarios need to be discussed in more details during the next edition. The current industrial standard is low power designs and voltage levels are less than 5 Volt and even 3.3, 2.8 and 1.5 volt. This need to be mentioned in the section 3.3 with the noise margin and driving loads. Effectively for the undergraduate courses the book can serve the good purpose to understand the digital terminology and logic circuit design.Chapter 4 discusses about the combinational logic design and author has covered the concepts in detail with the minimization techniques. For the further improvement in this book, authors can think about adding the area optimization techniques, the parallel logic and concurrent logic and the design performance. Even for better readability the medium complex examples need to be discussed in this chapter.Chapter 5 has information about the basic of VHDL and with reference to the initial chapters the emphasis is given to implement the logic structure. This chapter has VHDL codes for some functionality. Still it lacks the basic difference between structural, behavior and RTL description. For small density logic the approach explained by the authors is good but as design complexity increases the approach is not suitable. So during the next edition it is better to add the different types of VHDL abstractions with the examples.Chapter 6 has VHDL codes and it lacks the naming conventions followed in the practical world. Even the sequence should be MUX, Demux, Advantages and disadvantages with VHDL implementations and then use of decoders, encoders. On page 183-184 there is functional issue in the design of encoder and author should correct this. The encoder all inputs are logic “0000” then the output is also “00” in the design. So according to the given VHDL description output is “00” for input “0001” and for when others condition that may be “0000”. Under such circumstances it is essential to add the status flag functionality to generate flag output as logic ‘1’ when all inputs of encoder are logic ‘0’.Chapter 7 page 255 has the tmargin delay but the cause of the delay is not explained properly. The Process, Voltage Temperature variation or On-chip-variation need to be explained with some practical example then the timing diagram and the maximum frequency calculation section can be more meaningful and readers will be able to correlate the same with the practical scenarios.Chapter 8: VHDL constructs like if-then-else has potential problem in the description. Please check page 271 code first “Due to missing ‘else’ clause it infers the latch. But author has described this as combinational logic. Unnecessary unintentional latches are inferred in the design. In this chapter most of the example lacks the naming conventions. Even the quality of example need to be improved, even there is need to add few practical applications.Chapter 9 has sequential logic VHDL description; still it lacks the difference between the behavior and RTL. The RTL coding should be improved with the meaningful naming conventions and with some additional complex functionality.Chapter 10 and 11 has only theoretical information about the memories and programmable logic and this can be improved with some practical scenarios and with few examples and realization of VHDL into synthesis.Chapter 12 and 13 covers VHDL coding of adders to processor but still the linking of the concept to implement the design is lacking in this. These two chapters can be improved by adding other concepts related with RTL design, synthesis and design implementation using FPGA or ASIC.Overall the book covers many concepts but lacks the practical scenarios and even it lacks the complex example design, synthesis and implementation. But this book is good for beginners and students to understand the digital concepts and basics of VHDL programming.
