It's rare that I ever finish a book in a day, or that a story will cause me to drop everything and just do nothing but keep reading, but Witchmark did that for me. I loved this book so much. It is captivating and romantic - it's like if Downton Abbey had magic and allowed it's LGBTQ characters to have an actual romance. Once you start reading Witchmark, there's really no stopping. It's my new obsession. I need a sequel to this like, yesterday. I need at least four books in this series right fricking now. Love it love it love it love it love it love it. More please. My only regret reading the ARC is that it will make the wait for a sequel so much longer.I need more. Miles/Tristan forever, damn it!

I bought this on a recommendation and was disappointed when I started reading it to find the romance more centered than I usually prefer and the good/bad distinctions a little overly discrete. It's readable and engaging so I didn't consider DNFing but was sort of meh.But she flips the script several times. The story starts with an outcast member of the ruling class discovering the trail of a possible conspiracy. But each new piece of the conspiracy (a big corporate/government allegory) tilts his worldview a bit and changes how he sees things. And each change complicates his relationships with society and his past.If I have criticisms they are mostly that the romance was too saccharine for my tastes, and the love interest entirely too perfect. But the world building was excellent and much more complex than you'll expect from the first chapters.

I read a lot of science fiction and I must say I enjoyed this book immensely! Right from the first page, I was hooked. The characters are carefully drawn and you are immediately immersed in a very real world. I believe this will be considered a classic and a sure Hugo contender!

Book Review: Witchmark by CL PolkRich magicians are fine. Poor ones are not to be tolerated, and their proper place is to serve as a stool to step on for the rich to climb to greater heights. That is the premise of Witchmark, which takes place in an early 20th century England-like country fighting a war on the continent against undesirables. I appreciate the novel take that magic is not for kids but rather the exclusive purview of grownups who have Serious Business to take care of. Caricatural mean industrialists, as usual, wish to prolong the war and line their pockets. The good guys, who want freedom to live and love, are trying to ferret out the truth and are trying to stay one step ahead of the bad guys bent on eliminating truth and goodness: sounds like a standard plot but there are refreshing takes on the concept and the weaving of the magic elements into the storyline is well done and imaginative. The ending is a little stretched but kept my interest.

What a wonderful novel! I had so much fun reading it. The world within Witchmark's pages is captivating, as are the main characters. I was completely absorbed. Interesting concept, charm in spades, and a mystery that I just could not figure out (usually a rarity, so a super grand surprise!){SPOILERS BELOW}My only quibble (and they are minor and in no way blemish my enjoyment), I felt the build up to the romance was enchanting but the payoff a bit lacking (very "fade to black"). I don't need "penny romance novel" levels of detail, but I was left wanting in that arena. My second wish is that the sequel would focus on the main characters in Witchmark, not the sister, whom, alas, I never warmed to. I felt she was never fully redeemed, so I'm not too keen on an entire book devoted to her.All in all...Perfect way to spend a rainy afternoon!

Witchmark is a romp through a landscape that is at once familiar and at the same time strange. I loved the urban fantasy sensibility in a post WWI world (though this is not our world). I fell deeply in love with Miles and Tristan's relationship. The love scenes were expertly and sensuously drawn. I am writing this review a few weeks after I read the book and what remains with me most vividly is the romance between Miles and Tristan. Their love scenes were sweet and erotic. The world she creates is intriguing and I'd like to see more of it in subsequent books. We are focused so tightly on the characters that we do not see much of the geopolitics of this world, though it is clear that they are critically important. It leaves a lot of room for future books to explore and I hope she will. There is a hopeful vibe that builds through the book as the characters deal with the consequences of war and of the unfairness of life. It is as if emerging from a nightmare and blinking at the warm light filtering into the room. This is a good book, a fast read, and definitely enjoyable. It drew me in and kept me there until I finished. Recommended.

This was on my want-to-read list for months, and I finally got down to buying it. It was fast paced. The story plunges you into a murder mystery from the very first chapter. The book is about power: both metaphorical and literal. We follow in the footsteps of Miles who is in hiding at the beginning of the story. He is a psychiatrist, and also a witch. There are many mysteries that unfold as you go through the book. This makes the plot complex - too much so and at times I was confused. The social structure was rather difficult to understand and the backstories and explanations were few and far between. However, if you do read until the end all the threads fall into place in a spectacular, explosive finale.I did not know it was categorized under LGBT when I started reading it, so the relationship between Miles and Tristan was a surprise. There was also very little humour or wit - which I felt was lacking.Nevertheless, I must admit this is a gripping tale and I look forward to the next installment.

[Note to the Reader: just in case Amazon's software merges reviews of different translations: This is a review of the Penguin Classics "History of the Kings of Britain" by Geoffrey of Monmouth, translated by Lewis Thorpe, originally published in 1966 (with some minor bibliographic additions and corrections in the early 1970s).]Geoffrey of Monmouth's "History of the Kings of Britain" (as it is usually called) was, during the Middle Ages, one of the most influential books yet written in Britain. It was perhaps exceeded in European importance only by the Venerable Bede's "Ecclesiastical History of the English People" -- and Geoffrey's "Historia Regum Britanniae" is presented as a companion to Bede, covering topics that Bede, a mere Anglo-Saxon interloper, never knew. It purports to give the "real" history of the islands, from the advent of Brutus the Trojan and his followers to the successors of Arthur. If one adds its numerous translations into vernacular languages (it was, of course, written in Latin -- only the English understood English) one can agree with the medievalist John Jay Parry that Geoffrey's book was simply one of the most influential of the Middle Ages, wherever written. From the mid-1960s until 2007, anyone looking for a modern English translation of Geoffrey's Latin text had only one first-rate option: Lewis Thorpe's spirited English version for Penguin Classics, which first appeared in 1966. (And which I read sometime in the late 1960s.) This was based mainly on a single "good" manuscript, as edited by Acton Griscom in 1929, with consultation of the two other modern editions of the Latin text then available, by E. Faral (also 1929; an attempt at a critical text based on several manuscripts), and by Jacob Hammer (a "Variant Version," 1951).In my opinion, Thorpe's translation, despite its restricted textual foundation, remains the best introduction to Geoffrey, and the "historical" Arthur he created; the introduction and notes assume no specialized knowledge on the part of the reader, and the translation itself is graceful, and divided in eight parts, which increase its intelligibility (instead of the traditional twelve-book format, with chapters of greatly varying lengths; marginal references to such divisions are included for ease of cross-reference.) Thorpe also includes a chronology ("Time Chart") and a good (amazing detail) index of characters and places, with details of events they are involved with.In the Middle Ages, it was, of course, especially popular in England (where it was several times translated, sometimes by way of a French translation), and notably in Wales: Parry counted at least three Welsh translations, preserved in at least fifty manuscripts. (See Parry's Introduction to "Brut Y Brenhinned," or 'chronicle of rulers,' an edition and translation of one of the several Welsh translations, published in 1937, and now available on-line from the Medieval Academy of America). Indeed, little as the Welsh and the English agreed on other things, they both borrowed "Brut," i.e. "Brutus," originally a nickname for the "Historia," as a generic term for a national chronicle. The book presents the British -- that is, strictly speaking, the Welsh and their ancestors -- as descendants of displaced Trojans, presenting itself as a sort of sequel to Virgil's "Aeneid," as well as "prequel" to Bede. Geoffrey claims to be translating an "Old British Book" (i.e., a book in Welsh, or, possibly Breton), a claim taken seriously into the early twentieth century, by which time it became reasonably clear that the supposed versions of the "old book" -- one of which had been dated to the seventh century! -- were in fact post-Geoffrey; although some of these Welsh translations did contain genuine old stories interpolated into Geoffrey's versions.Geoffrey also claimed to be translating a separate "Prophecies of Merlin," usually incorporated into the larger work -- this too is no longer taken seriously. (He also wrote a verse sequel, "The Life of Merlin," which has been translated into English at least three times. Reviews of a Kindle edition of J.J. Parry's translation -- as "Vita Merlini" -- complaining of format issues, are not encouraging.)King Arthur may already have been launched into European celebrity before the 1130s, when Geoffrey tied him down to a more-or-less recognizable time and place, and equipped him with the most up-to-date manners and customs of the early twelfth century, but it is to Geoffrey we owe the standard picture of Merlin as the adviser of kings, the stories of King Lear and of Cymbeline, and, perhaps, Old King Cole (or Coel) -- although not the nursery-rhyme that enshrines him."Historia Regum Britanniae" was a medieval equivalent of a best-seller, with at least 219 known surviving manuscripts of the Latin original, plus translations and paraphrases (as mentioned, into Welsh, French, and Middle English), in whole or in part, into most Western European languages (and rather quickly, by medieval standards). There was also at least one attempt to "dress up" its Latin style with classical and Biblical (Vulgate) tags. It was even turned it into Latin hexameters (which brought the story even closer to Virgil in form, if not quality).A good part of the vast Arthurian literature derives its "historical" structure from Geoffrey's book, directly, or, probably more often, indirectly. (See the opening line of "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," for one convenient example: "After the siege and assault were ceased at Troy...") Malory did not include Geoffrey's main Merlin material, but he did include Arthur's "Roman War" (as Book V of the Caxton edition), which is a highlight of Geoffrey's version. (The "Historia" is largely structured around clashes between the Romans and the Britons, as rival "Trojan" nations.)Despite recurrent rejections of its historicity, in whole or in part, beginning with skepticism at its first appearance, it remained, right through the seventeenth century, an "authority" on Britain, from the settlement by Trojan exiles, through Roman invasions, to Arthur, and finally the Anglo-Saxon conquest; with intimations that the true Britons, that is, the Welsh, would regain sovereignty. The Welsh Tudors were particularly interested in it as a legitimating document. The other translation available was that by Sebastian Evans, published in Dent's "Temple Library" in 1904, and included in the original Everyman's Library series a few years later, in which it was reprinted through much of the twentieth century. Evans' slightly bowdlerized translation, into Elizabethan-sounding prose, was at least readable, if not a good reflection of Geoffrey's style. Alas, it was based on the the derivative "San-Marte" edition (ed. A. Schulz, 1854), based mainly on the earlier, uncritical, printed texts, with some variant readings and corrections. It was improved with some later editing, notably by Charles W. Dunn in 1963, but could not escape the faults of its origin.Since Thorpe's work, there have been two subsequent translations, both appearing in 2007, one of them, by Michael Faletra (Broadview Books), unfortunately, out-of-date almost as soon as printed. The other, part of an edition by Michael D. Reeve of the Latin text, was translated by Neil Wright, who, ironically, had edited the "provisional edition" used for Faletra's translation. I've been reading the Reeve/Wright version, with the object of reviewing it, and I like it very much; but as an edition it is anything but user-friendly, and probably downright intimidating to the novice. The introduction is given over almost entirely to problems in establishing the text, and takes for granted that the reader knows something about Geoffrey's life and times, and the significance of whether one or another of the book's various dedications to assorted 12th-century VIPs is original, interpolated, or added by another hand. Wright's translation compares well with Thorpe's in most passages, and having the Latin text at hand to see what is being translated is often enlightening.

I finished reading Geoffrey of Monmouth's The History of the Kings of Britain in November 2014, all except the 83-page "index raisonné". It's really a ripping yarn, and there's probably some truth in it. Most importantly, people in the centuries after this book did place some credibility in it. I recently read (in "Faith and Treason: The Story of the Gunpowder Plot") that James I of England thought that he was descended from Brutus in accordance with the genealogy in Geoffrey's book.I thought there was not enough commentary at the beginning on just how much of the book had any historical veracity. The very early material about Aeneas and Brutus was obviously totally bogus, although an enormous amount of detail was provided. No doubt the old foundation legends were built upon, century after century, until they ended up in the hands of Geoffrey. I prefer books which give copious footnotes on the veracity or otherwise of ancient attempts at history. For example, the Penguin Pausanias guide books to ancient Greece (Volume 1 and Volume 2) give superb commentary paragraph by paragraph on the authenticity or otherwise of everything in those huge books. It was interesting to see the early origins of the story of King Lear, Cordelia, Regan and Goneril. It was interesting to see some early origins for the Merlin and Arthur stories. Some of the later material about the Angles and Saxons had some credibility. There's a lot of support from Gildas and Nennius and Bede, but they are extremely unreliable also. (Bede is, apparently, very reliable for the couple of hundred years before his time, but not for the earlier history, which he based on other sources.)

I was appalled at the editing (or lack of editing) as it seemed each page was rife with typos. I have honestly never in my life seen or read a book with such poor editing. I'm reading this for school, and I enjoy Arthurian literature, but I stopped in the midst of my assigned reading to write this review because the quality is so poor. Whoever gave the green light for this book to be released into the world should be ashamed of themselves. Do yourself a favor and shell out an extra couple of dollars for a better copy.

This largely made-up "history" is a fascinating example of a medieval understanding of history as "serious entertainment" (quoting Nancy Partner's wonderful scholarly work of the same name). It is not only the source of the Arthurian tradition as we know it (and of the tale of King Lear), it was almost universally regarded as historical fact until the 17th century. Equally entertaining and enlightening, even today. Geoffrey was a gifted storyteller. Anyone seriously interested in reading this should look at Michael Faletra's 2008 translation, as well as his very accessible and informed introduction. This really shouldn't be read on a Kindle...

This reproduction of Geoffrey of Monmouths' classic work is a waste of your money. Attractively bound but the reproduction of the text is cheap and not particularly readable. Also, the text is plagued by spelling errors and typos that bespeak of incredibly sloppy scholarship. Finally, the editing is terrible with footnoting that amounts to just opinion criticizing historical inaccuracies within the work. A simple statement regarding this within the introduction would have been more than sufficient. Buy another edition of this work and enjoy it for the legendary value it imparts; do not waste your time or money on this one.

From the Back Cover

Youth ministry expert Chap Clark substantially updates and revises his groundbreaking book with a new chapter on youth at society's margins; fresh material on social networking and gaming; and the latest research, statistics, and documentation throughout."The youth of our culture have been deeply wounded by our collective neglect and adult-driven self-focus. Young people need adults to understand what they are going through and people to care about them without a personal agenda. This book was very helpful to me, and my attitude toward teens will never be the same."--Doug Fields, speaker; author, Speaking to Teenagers"As parents of teenagers and as a family deeply invested in developing the leadership potential of young men and women, my wife and I recognize in Hurt 2.0 what we have been seeing and sensing but haven't been able to name. Chap Clark's research has helped us to understand what kids today are experiencing and how we can create a better present and a brighter future for our youth."--Eric McAfee, Silicon Valley entrepreneur; venture capitalist; chairman, McAfee Capital"Based on solid research and years of insightful observation, Clark's Hurt 2.0 serves to open the eyes of parents, youth workers, pastors, educators, and youth-serving professionals to realities from which the church has too often chosen to look away. Hurt 2.0 offers a deep and penetrating look into the contemporary adolescent experience that will serve us well as we work to have a prophetic, preventive, and redemptive influence on the world of today's youth culture."--Walt Mueller, president, Center for Parent/Youth Understanding"Chap Clark has spent years studying the lives and hearts of kids, and as parents of three teenagers, we are personally grateful for his insight and work. In Hurt 2.0, Chap takes us deeper into their world, helping us to better understand not only our own kids but also all young people."--Ronnie Lott, former All-Pro, NFL defensive back, and Karen Lott, children's advocate

While others have written on this topic from research based on articles and other books, Chap Clark gets his hands dirty in the world of teens. In so doing, his heart for those misunderstood by many in Western Society is evident. His research is good; his speculations, deep; his conclusions, solid and challenging. As a Youth Pastor, it is easy for me to read books like this and feel overwhelmed by the amount of work to do to regain ground lost due to distrust, selfish ambitions, and ignorance caused by those adults who desire to remain uninformed about the world of today's teenager. Instead, books like this ought to make us think about what we can change in ourselves to best reach those around us. May we aspire to do so by the grace and mercy of Jesus.

Love the book and the insights it gives, especially for someone going into ministry. Also, great transaction with the seller. They personally contacted me once it was shipped and it came in perfect condition/exactly how it was described.

A great book for parents of teens and adults who work with youths 13-21. Brings about a great understanding of our youth today. From a 50 pluser, they are not like we were when teens. It's a totally different culture and the book explains things nicely. It has helped me to see and understand things from a totally different perspective. I now relate so well with my children and their friends. A remarkable and very needed experience.

What is the book about?"Hurt 2.0' is about getting inside the world of today's teenagers. Chap's purpose is to share how life is different for today's high school students. What do I think about it?The research, stories, and candor is fantastic. This book will pop the eyes and open the minds of those who work with teens. What got me pumped up?The real-life-hold-nothing-back approach is wonderful . I don't have teenage kids yet but this book has given me tremendous insight into what is combating the way my wife and I want to raise our children. What was deflating?I thought there would be more updated material. Yes, there are a couple of new chapters as well as new stories here and there but for the most part this book is paragraph-for-paragraph of the first version."So, would you recommend it?"Of course, you can't go wrong with Chap's research! But if you're expecting a whole lot more than what was included the first edition then you won't get it.

Really insightful although sometimes repetitive and a little too clinical for my taste. I am trudging through, however, because it is important information that I wish I could share with every adult who works with youth, especially the high-risk youth I work with! Thank you, Chap Clark, for sharing your time in the trenches!

The gold standard for helping anyone who cares about teenagers understand the world of teenagers. I've been a youth pastor for over a decade, and I've seen high school students, high schools, youth groups all over the country. Clark's research and conclusions are the most descriptive, accurate, helpful resources out there. It's suitable for volunteers, parents, students, academicians, teachers... pretty much everyone.Readers be advised, this book will make you work. It's meant to be both practical as well as academically rigorous. The material is excellent, the research was done right, and I've seen the benefits of applying this, both in my own ministries and in others' ministries. You can't go wrong.

I enjoy this book but also find it frustrating. Because I work with youth and kids and its troublesome to read that some of my kids may be seriously lonely. Its well written and enjoyable to read. But it has many moment where I have been angered and depressed from the authors findings. Its important to read this though. To not be in the fog of thinking everything is good with my youth ministry.

Great book to help with clients nderstanding teens

Bought this to read with our kids before we visited the park ourselves. This was a perfect way to learn the history and significance of the area at a level that could be understood by young children. It was very accurate and informative. Even the parents learned something!

Great book!

I visited mesa verde in 2017. It is one of the most amazing things to see. Makes you think and visualize how these people lived. I would love to explore more of the unexplored dwellings. I think the parks should build a small one to wonder throughout So you can actually see where they lived.

Good for kids. Wasn't bought for kids. Last time I buy a book online. Definitions would be helpful to children.

"A powerful book, you must read this amazing story in order to appreciate the life that has been given to us and to hang on to what we have." - Radio New Delhi "In Sahitia Academy Conference I met the author ADIVA GEFFEN. She gave us to read parts of her new book. After reading it we implored her to read the whole book and so we did.Starting reading, you can't let it go,it is a story about an exceptional woman who knew to choose. Life and love. It is a story about people, Jewish people, who survived the dark yet live saving forest, while escaping from Nazi soldiers and their dogs. it is about victory of Jews who survived the holocaust, each of them in its own way." - Time of India 2016

From the Author

I first heard the story of Shurka when I was 20 years old. She was a childhood friend of my mother, and when she immigrated to Israel, she sat and told us her story and we all listened. I remember telling myself, this story is a masterpiece. This is a story worthy of a book that must be written. This is a story of a simple, regular woman who lived in some Polish village, whose whole dream was to raise her babies, milk the cows, and curl up under a heavy quilt with her husband in their little hut. The war came and destroyed everything, the Germans came and she understood that it was all over, but she did not let her spirit wither, the war did not destroy that strongest instinct of all, the love of life that pulsed within her.

Author and playwright Adiva Geffen weaves an exceptional WW2 Historical Novel based on a true story of a Jewish holocaust survivor. With fascinating twists and turns, and emotional highs and lows this book will captivate the reader from the first page to the last. The author paints an all-encompassing human dramatization of love, loss and survival in a very vivid and convincing way. In addition, the characters are drawn with great credibility and conviction. It’s a fast-paced novel that will keep you engaged from the first page to the last. The book description gives a powerful preview: ‘She was a beautiful and happy young woman who lived a fairy-tale life. Shurka, her beloved husband and their two small children lived in a pretty house in a village in Poland, surrounded by a little garden with lilies. This was their life and nothing could harm it, or so they thought…WWII broke out and though the happy family thought the Germans would never reach their idyllic village, they quickly understood they were wrong and their happiness came to a brutal end. The family had to flee their house and find shelter in a neighboring Ghetto where they realized that the Gestapo was taking Jews away on trucks every night, and they were never seen again. The family decided to escape into the deep dark forest. There, surrounded by animals, they knew that this was their only chance to get away from the real beasts. They had no idea what would await them, but they knew that doing nothing was not an option if they wanted to survive…’Surviving The Forest had every element a good story should have. A solid plot, attention to detail, but best of all fleshed out, well-written and well-rounded character development. There’s an abundance of well-illustrated scenes that make you feel like you are right there in the story, and that’s something I really look for in a good book.Captivating and commendable this work had me immersed from the beginning. Inspired by real events, it’s a well-crafted fiction interwoven with true-life historical drama. The story flowed from scene to scene with ease, and the author shows exceptional ability when it comes to storytelling. There are plenty of attention-grabbing moments in this page turner that will take the reader on a truly compelling and mesmerizing journey! It’s one of those books that comes along once in a while that makes you want to read it non-stop until you get to the end. I’m giving nothing further away here. And this, I hope, will only add to the mystery and enjoyment for the reader! The result is a wonderfully written and richly descriptive novel, its brilliantly drawn characters driven by love and the will to survive.I’ll be looking forward to reading more from this author in the future. I would highly recommend this book. A well-deserved five stars from me.

I recently watched Downfall, a movie which depicts the last days of Hitler and his comrades while confined to a bunker as Berlin falls around them. I remarked to my son that watching this movie was like watching a video filmed in the bunker itself. It was that realistic. This book has a similar feel. From the idyllic days of Shurka's childhood to the troubled times which come to her small village to the horrifying devastation when the Nazis bring their efforts to exterminate the Jews to Shurka's home, I felt as if I was right there with Shurka and her family. While reading of the atrocities committed by one human being on another, part of me wants to believe that the Holocaust was a nightmare, a work of fiction, anything but reality. However, one cannot allow oneself to turn a blind eye. Nationalism is a dangerous mindset. One must always be critical of one's government and officials and never become entrapped in any sort of extremist ideology.I wept openly while reading this book. It is a tremendously powerful work. The writing style is easy to read while not being overly simplistic. There are a few minor grammatical and punctuation issues, but no flaws in the storytelling itself.I feel that this book could be an excellent addition to a course on the history of World War II. Seeing the events of the time through the eyes of a sympathetic character would encourage students to develop empathy for those who lived through the horrors of the Holocaust rather than simply memorizing dates and military data. The events of the Holocaust must never be forgotten. This is is a very important story. I recommend it wholeheartedly.

Every time I read a book about WW2 I think how terrible must be when whole your world changes in a blink of your eye. In one moment you have a family, you have friends, you have life and you don't doubt that it will last like that till your natural end and then, over the night, everything changes. You are not the person who you were yesterday, you are now hunted like an animal and scared to death, you have no one to help you and you already lost everything or you gonna lose it, including your life. This is a story about such a change of life, a story about how brave you have to be to survive. A story that will definitely make you shiver, because it is, like all books about all wars, very dark book. But it is also a book about a hero, in fact about a heroine, and how a hero can be anyone, even the smallest person in a world who has never thought that she can be so strong. Strong as Shurka.

This is the story of Yaakov Mendel and his wife Taiba Shidlovsky. Yaakov and Taiba are living happily in a remote village of Poland where their daughter Sarah takes birth. Everything is going smooth and then WWII breaks out. Nobody thought Germans would invade to this remote village of Poland but they did. And before that Sarah had to think fast how to survive. It was all about her and her family's survival. And then she decides to go deep in the forests to save their life from these beasts. The story passes through a number of turmoils and ultimately it is to be seen if Sarah survives. And if she does, how?

I found the book quite heavy, but for a story so realistic and based on such crude events I was expecting it. The story of this family who has to escape first their home, then the ghetto, and then have to survive a journey through the wilderness, is emotional, breath-taking, but also kept me pinned to the book most of the time. It was realistic not only in events, but also in the way it was written and how the descriptions made one basically feel part of the story - it did get to me sometimes.I really recommend this book to anyone looking for a thrilling story about a family in the holocaust which is emotion-packed and very realistic. Enjoy!

I was always interested in the history and always trying to read more about it. This book is very interesting and inspiring at the same time. Definitely recommend.

Review

A Financial Times Best Book of 2014“He’s written a really good book — we might as well get that out of the way, as so much else about Timothy F. Geithner remains unsettled… There’s hardly a moment in Geithner’s story when the reader feels he is being anything but straightforward — a near-superhuman feat for someone who spent so much time in public life defending himself from careless and dishonest personal attacks. The decisions he made are easier to criticize than they are to improve upon. I doubt many readers will put his book down and think the man did anything but his best. On his feet he might have stammered and wavered. That in itself was always a sign he was unusually brave.” –Michael Lewis, New York Times Book Review“An intimate take on the financial crisis… gripping… conveys in visceral terms just how precarious things were during the crisis, just how frightened many first responders were, and just what an achievement it was to avert a major depression… [Geithner] demonstrates that he can discuss economics in an accessible fashion, making the situation the country faced in 2008 and 2009 tactile, comprehensible—and harrowing—to the lay reader. Along the way, he also gives us a telling portrait of himself.” –New York Times “A how-to manual for anyone faced with a financial crisis… Mr Geithner was known for his brutal candor, and as an author, he does not disappoint.” —The Economist “A fascinating memoir about life in the maelstrom of the financial crisis… Earlier books have described much of what happened that September, but Geithner was present for all the frantic meetings, the thousands of phone calls — and in the case of Lehman, the failure to find a buyer that could keep it alive. New problems cropped up almost weekly, if not daily. He explains each in easy-to-understand language and what the issues were that shaped the responses… There could be another crisis someday, of course, but what Geithner and his colleagues did has made one far less likely.” –USA Today“Sharply worded and candid memoir.” —Financial Times“Geithner does an admirable job of explaining the origins and complexities of the crisis for the average person. But there’s enough detail and retrospective lessons-learned to make it valuable for students of financial history….fast-paced and colorful….Stress Test goes beyond other crisis books.” –Los Angeles Times “Throughout Stress Test, one gains a deep appreciation for the heart-pumping decisions made by Geithner and his colleagues from 2007 through 2012. And he makes a compelling case that overhwelming force is necessary in crisis, and that the measures taken by the Fed and two successive administrations prevented even more pain for ordinary Americans.” –WashingtonPost.com“An unsparing insider’s account of the financial crisis from the former Secretary of the Treasury, unpacking the hard decisions and terrible trade-offs that devastated the economy but staved off a deep, lasting depression.” —TIME.com“The central irony of Stress Test, the new memoir by former U.S. Treasury Secretary Tim Geithner, is that a guy who was accused of being a lousy communicator while in office has penned a book that is such a good read…I’ve now read four or five of these first drafts of the history of the Great Recession, and I believe Stress Test represents the biggest contribution of the bunch.” —Bill Gates “Sensational . . . Tim’s book will forever be the definitive work on what causes financial panics and what must be done to stem them when they occur.” —Warren Buffett “Very few important subjects in American history have been the subject of as much disinformation and deliberate distortion as the events surrounding the financial crisis that broke in 2008. Tim Geithner’s candid, clear-headed, and refreshingly self-effacing account of his role in formulating the federal government’s response is a very welcome antidote. Geithner’s book is a triple threat: it is first-rate economic history, insightful political science, and, most important, a cogent exposition of the importance of adhering to the policies adopted in the aftermath of the crisis if we are to succeed in diminishing the likelihood of any recurrence.” —Barney Frank “Stress Test is an absolutely compelling account of the financial crisis, written in a clear, graceful style with striking honesty at every step along the way. Timothy Geithner brings a complex story to life with telling anecdotes and personal reflections.” —Doris Kearns Goodwin  “This is a lucid, fascinating, and extremely important book. Every American should read it. Geithner does something unusual: he engages in substance. With both insight and humility, plus a good dose of wry humor, he explains what really happened during the financial crisis. No matter your political persuasion, you will find this book educational, enlightening, and interesting.” —Walter Isaacson “The country owes Tim Geithner great appreciation for his role in overcoming the financial crisis of 2008.  He has now indebted it further with writing a thoughtful, very readable and informative account of the conduct of policy at the edge of disaster.” —Henry A. Kissinger

This book is user friendly, well written and well thought out. It shows that Obama chose his Secretary of the Treasury very wisely. The detail is amazing, but not in the least boring. It reads like a novel. Geithner was the exact right man for the job, already skilled and savvy in the knowledge of how to go about rescuing nations from economic crisis. This is well worth the read and impressive. Geithner emerges as a very likable and admirable human being, who just happened to be in the right time and place to save us from Depression 2.0.

The Great Recession and financial panic of 2007-2009 has a lot of myths and stories surrounding it concerning what the government did or didn't do, what it should've done and shouldn't have done, and the motives of those working behind the scenes. Former Secretary of the Treasury Timothy Geithner is one of those lighting rod figures from the crisis who, because of his relative anonymity prior to the crisis, is often misunderstood or caricatured. In this book, Sec. Geithner not only dispels the myths about his own background, but also provides a unique insight and perspective on the panic from one of the only two people in high government who was there from beginning to end (Fed chairman Ben Bernanke being the other one). But his story, and his experiences with financial panics, doesn't start in 2007, but rather starts with his upbringing in a family that was involved in international development and finances from when he was very young, always moving from one country to another and spending very little time in America. From there, it moves on to his time as a civil servant in the Treasury department's international wing, dealing with the crises brought on the by the Asian financial panics of the 1990s and eventual rising to be Assistant Secretary of the Treasury in charge of the international branch. From those times Mr. Geithner picks up a lot of invaluable experience in financial panics, what makes them better, and what makes them worse. From there he makes the surprising leap to head of the Federal Reserve Bank of New York, the most powerful of the regional Federal Reserve Boards in the country. And that is where the main story begins as Mr. Geithner describes the events that led to the panic, the actions he took as FRBNY chair and then Treasury Secretary, why they took them, and why they were necessary even if they were both unpopular and counterintuitive. The book reaches its climax with the stress tests backed by promises of capital injections for those banks the tests deemed were in need of them. Once the results of the test are released in the spring of 2009 a certain measure of calm enters the markets and the last chapters feel like a denouement as he deals with the Eurozone crisis and the toxic politics of Washington following the ascendancy of the Tea Party in 2010. What is surprising is how in the first half of the book Mr. Geithner seems to undersell himself, not out of a sense of humility, but because he genuinely seemed to believe that there were other people better or more knowledgeable than him. From my perspective, it seems like a no-brainer that Pres. Obama tapped him to be Treasury Secretary, even if he was a terrible salesman (a flaw that he readily, even jokingly, admits to being). What is also great about this book is how much value it has beyond being another account of the financial crisis. He does a great job of explaining why the unpopular decisions the Fed, the FDIC, and the Treasury took were necessary to save the economy, even if he falls into the trap of using too much of the jargon of Wall St. to explain it. I believe this book has value not only as an account of this financial crisis, but as a guide to how to handle future financial, indeed any, crisis in the future. As Mr. Geithner is fond of saying, a plan beats no plan. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the true story behind the financial crisis and the Great Recession of 2007-2009.

Overall I really liked this book. While Tim Geithner is not an writer and his style is definitely not of a thriller, the portrait of the crisis from his view definitely contributes to the overall understanding of the financial crisis of 2008.This book should not be taken as "stand-alone" but read in the context of all the other ones out there about the crisis itself. It helps one to form their opinions in a clear and more fair way in my opinion. Finally, this book also help show that the work of the Treasury, Federal Reserve, and other institutions that prevented the crisis relied on countless individuals who never get recognized for their hard work and countless hours helping make this country better. My admiration and gratitude only got bigger after reading this account.

This book is the single best insider look at the events leading up to the financial crisis that was unleashed in September 2008. Mr. Geithner's text is well written, often humorous, and clearly describes the policy dilemmas faced by the Federal Reserve (Bernanke), the U.S. Treasury (Paulson), and the FDIC (Baird). The book is not technical and can be read by anyone interested in one key person's insights and role in events leading up to the global financial crisis and actions taken through 2012. Mr. Paulson has published his views from Treasury and we are waiting for Dr. Bernanke to do the same for his role as Fed chairman. For now, it is not possible to understand how actions taken by both the Federal Reserve and Treasury prevented the housing collapse from creating far more economic damage than it did without reading this book.

I think it’s an important book, basically covering the financial crisis from when Geithner headed the NY Fed through his years as Secretary of the Treasury in the Obama administration. Fresh, interesting, and scary insights into the crisis as well as Geithner, the person, and several other familiar notables and players. Can be a bit overwhelming in its treatment of the various elements of the crisis, including the reasons for it and the actions taken to resolve it. But it strikes me that Geithner tried hard to be as effective as possible in describing what was inherently an enormously complex set of causes and fixes. There was no pre-existing playbook, and much was defined in real time.I don’t see this as a politically-motivated book, though Geithner is unabashed in his praise for Obama throughout. He is direct in his assessment of the actions of Congress and other individuals (not universally positive), with Republicans getting the most criticism. He is equally forthcoming in pointing out mistakes - both well-meaning as well as dumb, whether his own or others. There are no doubt errors, omissions, and biases that I can’t recognize.Geithner is very generous in his recognition of the contributions of the enormous number of talented and dedicated people throughout the government who worked the problem, but he is not shy about describing his own roles and leadership in driving for actions, even though fraught with risks. It seems arguable that history will identify him as the singular force in managing the crisis - not only for the US, but also for the world. Yet, it seems clear that this was not a personal goal. Indeed, his story may well be regarded as one of a “reluctant hero” who was doing his best in his job.Glad I read it - hope the story never repeats.
