Review

“Overdeck debuts with a just-irreverent-enough book . . . . She shows that she knows her audience and loves her subject. Paillot (the My Weird School series) is a great choice for collaborator . . . he does it all with a good-hearted, goofy energy that should propel readers through the pages.” ―Publishers Weekly, starred review“[This program] may have the potential to make bedtime math problems as loved as the bedtime story. . . . Hats off to Laura Overdeck. This project is a winner. A simple idea that may have as much of an impact on improving the science, technology, engineering and math interest in our children as many other well-funded programs.” ―Wired/GeekDad“We all know we should read to our kids. But even if bedtime stories are routine in your house, when's the last time you gave your kids a bedtime math problem? Probably never. And that's one reason American students might struggle in a future that requires mathematical literacy... Maybe if more children grew up doing bedtime math problems, those numbers would be different.” ―USA Today“Besides stopping the bad-mouthing of our own math skills and making sure that we're distributing our numbers-related conversations equally among our sons and daughters, what can a parent do to increase "math awareness" in our everyday lives? How about a bedtime math problem? . . . [in Bedtime Math]They're meant to be solved in their heads, and to promote both giggles and mathematical thought.” ―New York Times Motherlode Blog

Laura Overdeck delivers an exciting, fun-filled book for children to practice math skills. There are 86 pages of delightful topics, each topic is another math-solving problem. Some of the topics include: Eggstreme Mess; Playing Ketchup; Weather Or Not; Say Cheese; and several more. The stunning, colorful illustrations are funny, and inspire children to read. In addition, the author provides 3 challenges: WEE ONES,LITTLE KIDS, and BIG KIDS. The last page is a chart, providing the answers to all the math problems. Also, on each page, the answer is provided upside-down. It is found next to the page number, so that you are forced to turn the book upside-down to read the answer, after solving the math problem. An example of WEE ONES: If you throw 9 strands of angel hair pasta at the wall, but only 2 stick to it, how many end up on the floor? The questions become more-and-more challenging for LITTLE KIDS, and BIG KIDS. Laura Overdeck creates fun-filled games that interest children, such as skateboarding, games about water, jumping games and much more. The illustrations add additional entertainment, while the child is learning math skills. I wish this book was published when my children were young, because it inspires the child as they read-and-solve math problems. The illustrations are funny as they encourage thought-provoking math practice skills. This delightful book is educational, and a great way to practice math. Every colorful page provides a new math problem, along with illustrations. This is one of the most encouraging books for children to learn math that I have seen, and I will share it family and friends, who have young children. This fascinating book is a very good excuse indeed, when your child stays up late. Entertaining, educational, and inspiring. Highly recommended!

I've been looking for something like this longer than I realized until I took time to reflect, and 'do the math' ;) I was looking for something to bolster math skills in an engaging manner & this book, I think, will do the trick. I even consulted with my middle schl math teacher hubby & he concurs. He pointed out, for time's sake or whatever reason--many of the questions cld possibly be used without reading the short paragraph. Its my opinion that many of the students I work with really struggle with basic verbal reasoning/quantitative/math skills & I think this will book will help me support these students as we work on speech-language goals in therapy. I think it has other potential as well, such as attention, comprehension, identifying main idea, summarizing/paraphrasing, & understanding-explaining word play.

My 6 yo kindergardener has demonstrated aptitude to mathematics from an early age and given the curriculum in her school I felt that I needed to find tools to promote and stimulate her early learning beyond school. This book does the trick.By using the funny stories and questions in the book I managed to teach her the concepts of solving basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division and she found it great fun to be able to solve problems with 'big numbers' all by herself to the point that she's been asking me to do maths with her all the time.I'm super proud of my girl and extremely pleased with this book. If you feel your child is ready for basic arithmetics give this a try. I will certainly be purchasing the other books in the series.

This book exceeds my expectations. I just wanted a math book for my preschool niece and I didn't look too deeply into it.but when I received the book, I saw what a great resource it is. It has about 35 different amusing scenarios with questions for three different levels. This could easily be read with several children at once. Each scenario will have an easy addition or subtraction problem, a mid level question that is either a harder add/subtract or easy multiplication, and then a harder computation. My guess is kindergarten, 2nd/3rd grade, and then 3rd-5th grade for the hardest problems. It is a cute book with a lot of content. I would have loved to have had this when my family was younger.

Presentation is everything--If you present math to children as a hot fudge sundae and not awful tasting medicine, the intimidation factor just falls away. These mental math exercises are engaging, witty (and in some cases, mischievous), and perfectly tailored for small children--the subjects of the word problems involve animals, sports, cookie dough, legos, and of course, the 10 second rule. The illustrations are quirky and adorable, and perfectly capture the tone of the text. All problems have three different levels, so if you have kids of multiple ages, they can each get their own age-appropriate/level appropriate problem to work (no fighting!). No worries for parents -- the answers are all provided. Great companion to the website and Facebook page, but the specific advantage of this format is there is now something that kids can 'read' along with mom and dad (and look at the pictures) while they solve their math problems and learn basic mental arithmetic.

I like the book I just wish it specified it was more of an older reader than a toddlers. I implement some of the techniques used in the book daily, but I thought it was a book to read a toddler... it's not. it feels set up like a curriculum for parents to read then implement on a daily routine more than a book for toddlers. It is a great book don't get me wrong, it's just I expected to read it to my 4 yr old at bed time, good for kids just not toddlers.
