I, too, actively pursued these in the 1990s and found some really neat ones, but they are so few and far between that it's difficult to imagine a collection of this size. She makes it so much fun by writing one or two paragraphs with each, and sometimes more. A book full of history, and a book that's just plain fun to turn pages. What a delightful book, full of beautiful old photos, with detailed descriptions, when known.I learned as much about photography as I did about quilting from this book. I was also able to read about the photographic processes used at the time, 1855~1955. The reason we see so many photos taken outdoors is because the cameras back then needed more light to capture the image. There were picture postcards one could have made, but most that survive were never mailed, instead being traded from hand to hand. The long exposure times resulted in stiff poses and bored, almost scowling facial expressions. Once one realizes the constraints of photographic technique, the differences make sense.Nowadays we can snap a quick shot and post it to Instagram. Back then, a family portrait was a big deal.It is touching to see what people chose to show in their portraits: the family dog, their kitty or dolly, a favorite chair, their beautiful quilt. Back then, every single piece of fabric was precious. Most quilts were made by cutting up old clothing to make bed coverings. Everybody had homemade quilts in their homes. No wonder so many photos featured such handiwork - proudly.I especially liked the photo of the woman who chose to be photographed holding her Bible, with a quilt presumably made by her tacked up on the wall of the house behind her. The hammer used to put up the quilt is visible in the lower corner of the image. How sweet!It was such a treat to see many examples of practical scrap quilts. This book is a great inspiration for my own quilted creations.
This is a beautifully put together book and the author put a lot of thought and time into her research and is very knowledgeable in her field. Many of the photos are amazing and bring into focus how people dressed and lived in the 1850s and later. There is little to show after the 1940s and her captions are very repetitious, expressing the same ideas and thoughts over and over in just a slightly different way. I estimate that over half of the quilts pictured are "Crazy Quilts" and in many photos it's only a small quilted throw pillow that is included or quilts possibly owned by the photography studio and not one made by the people pictured. Considering the many styles and types of quilts that women fashioned during the time frame of her book, it is disappointing that 50% or more are of the same type (Crazy Quilts). Some of the photos are faded and you may need a magnifying glass to see the details she is describing in her captions. I do think that the photos themselves are amazing. Seeing people from other eras and how they dressed and where they lived is fascinating. But I was hoping for more variety in the quilts and possibly more information about the types of quilts made by the remarkable women (and men) who produced them. So, it's limited in the types of quilts pictured, but if you love old photos, you will like this book.
I was especially interested in the historical aspects of the vintage photographs of quilts and the people pictured with them.Janet Finley looked closely at the history of photographs, quilts and clothing the people are wearing. It is a peek at 325 images of everyday life from 1855 to 1955. It is a fabulous book for historians, museums with textile, fashion and photographic collections, quiters, quilt stores and quilting groups. This is a totally unique look at the world of quilts.
I wanted to give my sister-in-law, who is a quilter, something specific to her. This book is loaded with history and pictures. She LOVED it!
This is a gorgeous book for anyone who loves quilts and history. I didn't find the post mortem photos grim at all - they were lovely and sad and clearly showed the significance of quilts to these families. I do have one suggestion to make - get better editing. Nearly every lie and lay was used incorrectly, for example. Despite that, I'd buy the book again in a heartbeat.
I love to read this book when I go to bed. It is comforting to look at the pictures and imagine the lives of the folks in them. The descriptions are great and you learn a lot about the periods and people who made and displayed the quilts. Makes me want to go back in a time machine to better days.
It is really a beautiful book. I am very impressed. Included is so much history, not only about quilting and photography, but so much more. I have very much enjoyed reading it. I am savoring the book page by page. I have to decide which photo is my favorite. You can tell the author did an incredible amount of work on it. . . I can't even imagine where you'd start on a book like this. I like how nicely it is printed, too. . . the thick, glossy pages are great. A wonderful purchase for anyone who is into quilting, sewing, crafting, photography, America's history, and women and their place in history, etc.
