#246 Paid in Kindle Store (See Top 100 Paid in Kindle Store)

This book was not gripping at all. It was too confusing to follow. It could have been a really good book but it is written in a style loved by English authors: too many minor characters, jumping from past to present much too much, and leaving it to the reader to infer actions or results that don’t necessarily move the story along. I read this book twice and I’m still confused as to who is related to who.

A friend recommended a book she had read and in my search for it, this book showed up as a suggested book I might like based on my search. The price was .99 and ready for a print book verses audible book, I made the purchase. Why this book was only .99 is a mystery to me as this book, to me, was a best read and one I assume a movie will be made from. I enjoyed the mystery of trying to think and piece together possible connections prior to the written revelation. My reason for 4 stars verses 5 was there were so many characters, and time lines, that as I neared the end, wanting to guess the final conclusion connections before I saw them written, I had to scan, reread, the entire book and make handwritten notes to track who, what, where, and when. Once I did this, I guessed the plot twist just a page or two before it was revealed. Yet after the main plot twist, was written, the book filled in more “fill in the blank” info making the book end with a nice bow tied around its various time lines and characters.

This is the story of a home for unwed mothers, one where abuse and intimation are the key elements to keeping the young mothers under the control of the people running the home. When Samantha first becomes connected with the story, she is instantly fascinated and drawn into the secrets and cruelty surrounding the place. She becomes obsessed with finding out the truth, but she only has a few days before the home is torn down and all the secrets are buried forever. The book switches back and forth between Sam's search for answers in the present, and various times in the past as the reader gets a glimpse into what really happened. I found myself drawn into the story from the beginning and thoroughly enjoyed reading and unraveling this mystery.

This story keeps you on your toes, thinking constantly. There are many twists, turns, and interconnected characters with questions, shame, sadness, deceit, abuse, and mysterious pasts. A spider web of lives, deaths, and reality of events that occurred because of illegitimate births in the past, it is sometimes hard to follow. But, stick with it. Innocent young women and children who were tortured and taken advantage of by a Catholic home for unwed mothers, this story is heartbreaking and hard to believe could possibly happen. Though it’s not a true story, it is a historical work of fiction based on actual events of what occurred in British and Irish institutions for poor, young women who found themselves pregnant at a time when it was shamefully unacceptable. Generations in this particular family experience pain, secrets and confusion, because of secrets of the past. And, deep rooted anger results in this story of revenge and payback. I couldn’t put this book down it was so intriguing!

I couldn't not read this book. My experience as an unwed mother in a Catholic maternity home was so totally different. The Sisters were so caring and I can only thank God for that experience nearly 60 yrs ago. Thank you for reminding me how very fortunate I was. I look forward to reading more of your books

First let me say that I agreed with some of the diverse comments. The book was difficult to read for several reasons. It is based upon the fact that homes for unwed mothers as such, this one being Catholic, did exist. Some were wonderful homes, while others wrecked with cruelty, abuse and intimidation. Some programs gave the mothers choices, others simply took the babies away. This particular home was literally ugly. The story is tragic on so many levels. While reading the book the characters could get confusing. This is one of those books where a list of characters shown at the beginning would have been helpful. It is a tragic story, a who-dunnit, and mystery identity all in one. Overall it is well written, but because it is written in English style with so many twists and turns, it is not a quick read. It is easy to see why the reviews were so diverse.

Any one or two of the plot lines would have made an interesting and riveting story if the characters had been fully developed. As is, it is a hodge podge of too many plot lines that were not at all plausible. I was very disappointed as the book did not live up to the hype of "The most gripping, heartwrenching page-turner of the year", by any stretch of the imagination.

Book was just ok for me. Trying to keep track of all of the characters was a chore and confusing at times. Sad story overall about the way women were treated back in the day.
