Being a fan of Military Aviation books (having read F15E, A10, Apache, RAF Harrier, F16Viper Pilot), I found about the story of the sea harriers and realized I could add another book to my collection. This Book is interesting and detailed, accounting events from the perspective of Sharky, Mr Sea Harrier, in all kind of situations a CO would encounter. Although very detailed, it's not as exciting as other books I can compare with, its rather frustrating and tiring, somewhat like what he was experiencing as the war went along. After 3/4 of the book you feel like you know all there is to know, and the last 1/4 becomes rather repetitive and I found myself counting the pages until finish. However, the last chapter is very special as you can see the whole picture and connect dots as to how the system works no matter how many sharkies come along.Pros:*Detailed on operations, tasking, day-to-day*Detailed on flying tactics, training, ops.*Extended explanations about ACM in Anex.*Updated chapter 0 after 15 years*Works as Leadership tool (i've taken quotes, and way-of-action/thinking from this book to implement in my job)*can learn not only about flying, but also about Navy in general.Cons:*not very emotional (on the losses) nor exciting (on the attacks), maybe because it's from the Chief records, and not the pilots (more mature PoV)*extended on the troubles and problems and BS around the army/navy (gets frustrating, but heck, its the reality)*font is small (I found myself using glasses, which is not common, so my eyes wouldn't be destroyed)*too egocentric (sometimes it feels like the only valid opinion is Sharky's...)*fox kilo the RAF and the VulcansIn general, its a good read, I found myself absorbed in the book, but make sure you are prepared to concentrate, take the time to read, overcome the frustrations (as Sharky did) and you will finish it with a grin in your face.Thank you SHARKY!
Sharkey Ward, CO of 801 Squadron RNAS, demonstrates what keen, knowledable leadership does in planning and fighting. An extraordinary pilot of the SHAR (Sea Harrier), he trains is pilots at the cutting edge of their jet and their weapons systems. His descriptions of flying and fighting are simply wonderful and even more wonderful because they are in the unique Sea Harrier.Although the Navy (fish heads) and the RAF massaged the record of the Falklands War to the exclusion of the RNAS and 801 Squadron on HMS Invincable and to a lesser degree 800 Squadron on HMS Hermes, Sharkey Ward sets the story right. He's a really fine writer with an excellent "voice." The reader is taken into the meetings that matter, the relative quiet of his private quarters and the cockpit of the SHAR. In a compelling and clear way, he shows the folly of MOD and political thinking in the UK to the peril of the fleet, especially its protection at sea and at distance from RAF coverage. Not surprisingly, he's a powerful and thoughtful advocate of the SHAR and VSTOL aircraft as a weapons system that has proven it superiority in training and in battle.By way of conclusion, I would love to buy a Scotch for Sharkey Ward and to raise my own glass in toast to a truly great Naval officer, aviator and writer. Thanks Sharkey.
A rather dry account mostly aimed at the aviation minded reader. The author seems to have had a hard time going up against the powers that be during his time in the service. Still I enjoyed the read and got a better understanding how the Harrier was used and some of the difficulties involved.
Company was GREAT!!! Wonderful Customer Service!!!Met author of this book, so wanted to read it.Haven't finished the book yet, but so far, well written, so good read!!!
Fantastic read. Very interesting and honest view from first hand of the Falklands conflict. Changed my idea of how the war was fought.
Very interesting account of the naval air ops over the Falklands. The author truly was a maverick, and very innovative with his resources.
A pilots book, appreciated by a soldier. Amid and after war, the ugliness of inter-service rivalry raises its head.
Excellent read by a master story teller
