Review
When I was reading Water from an Ancient Well, I sometimes felt like I taking a spiritual pilgrimage to Cano Cristales, the most beautiful river in the world or the river of five colors. Located near the town of La Macarena in Colombia, South America, the river is famous for its colorful blotches of blue, green, black, and red causing some to call it the river that ran away to paradise. If you want to run away to paradise for a couple of days, and drink living water from a source unlike any other, read Kenneth McIntosh's deeply satisfying book. ----Leonard Sweet, best-selling author and professor. This book offers profound insights into a very different way of living our Christianity. Kenneth McIntosh invites us to imitate the Celtic saints who were aware of God as a living presence in everybody and everything. If we were to take seriously what he offers us in this book, we would experience a paradigm shift in our approach to spirituality. ----Dara Malloy, author, Celtic Priest and Monk on Inis Mor in the Aran Islands, Ireland; author of The Globalisation of God: Celtic Christianity's Nemesis. The author writes with humility; he does not prescribe. In the process, he takes us to places made sacred by inspired believers, depicting their lives as a romance that proved itself in everyday things. He invites us to enter into a similar divine love affair that involves the whole of life. This book could become a classic. ----Ray Simpson, author of Soul Friendship and Celtic Daily Light: A Spiritual Journey Through the Year; Founding Guardian of the International Community of Aidan and Hilda and Principal Tutor of its Celtic Christian Studies program.

I felt I needed to edit my review after having read more deeply into this book. I was looking for an introductory text on the subject of Celtic Christianity for some friends. This book works in some ways for me but not in other ways. Still, the link between Man, Nature and God comes through in his writing. At first reading I thought, "oh no here we go with the quaint tales of Celtic Saints and animals." But Mr. McIntosh expressed the underlying relationship (love) that binds it all together. A man who loves animals this much has to be on the right path. Where I wanted for more was in the theological differences that set Celtic Christianity apart from mainstream Christianity. But I decided there are other books to do that and it was unfair for me to put my expectations on the story Mr. McIntosh had set out to tell. It is a beautiful story in its own right. Now I think I will sleep better and also enjoy the book more without any preconceptions about what it ought to say. There are so many bad books about Celtic Christianity in print that this is indeed a breath of fresh air. Buy it and enjoy it.
I don't give many five stars, but Water From An Ancient Well is the best book on Celtic Christianity I've read so far.Water From An Ancient Well contains 15 essays about the ancient Celtic Christians, which may be read in any order. Each chapter contains scripture, a Celtic story about a saint, theology, history, and practical application. Water From An Ancient Well describes the Celts culture, beliefs, and how they were unique amongst Christians. The Celts hailed from Ireland, Scotland, Brittany, Wales, and Iona. When they were converted to Christianity, they were allowed to hold on to some of their pagan roots, and they believed that Christianity fulfilled their former pagan and druidic beliefs. The Celts had a deep reverence for nature, and believed that God was everywhere, including nature. They loved scripture, which they interpreted as epic stories of heroism. The Celts did not separate the mundane from the spiritual, but infused every daily activity with prayer. Thus, everything they did was sanctified as a sacred act. They balanced solitude with service, and found their solitude was intimately connected to the natural world. The Celts are widely known for a love of poetry and singing, knotwork, stone solar crosses, illuminated Bibles, and monastic communities.I thoroughly enjoyed this book and will reference it often. I highly recommend it for the serious seeker as well as the curious.
Kenneth McIntosh understands the beauty of Celtic Christianity. Historical Celtic Christianity was a part of the western region of the one, holy Catholic and Apostolic Church and it offers a rich alternative to modern day Fundamentalist Evangelicalism, This is a good introduction to Christianity to inspire many of Celtophiles. I recommend it to anyone interested in Celtic spirituality. I think there is a trend among older former Neopagans to come back to the Church and realize that there are many wonderful treasures in Celtic Christianity.
This book is one that suits me, it fits like an old sweater and reminds me of all the things life has unlearned in me. I have told several friends that if they want a guide to spiritual faith that urges you forward gently, this is the book they need to get. It draws a soul back to reality and helps it realize that there are no better blessings than a child's smile and a fresh green meadow to rejoice in. There is so much baggage today in life, it's wonderful when a book like this comes along and unloads the baggage for our tired minds.
I read a lot of Celtic Christianity books and lead a Celtic Spirituality Worship service. This is one of the best books on the subject I have read. It is practical and down to earth, respectful of the material. Like me, Kenneth McIntosh believes what he writes about and he shows you what is important about the stories that so easily get written off as fantasy or fabrication and how to integrate these spiritual practices into your daily life just as he has done in his. The saints become real people and their experience speaks to us today. He shows how to live a life full of the joy, the mystery and the faith that characterized these early Celtic Christians. I recommend this book as highly as possible and I hope you'll buy a copy .
This is a fascinating discussion on the origins of the Celtic religion. It dovetailed with Christianity , which came later. There are so many similarities that it was not difficult for the Celts to become Christian.
This book is filled with great stories from the ancient Celtic tradition. It is also a spiritual feast of what feels like divine guidance and inspiration. The writer shows how Celtic Spirituality is still alive and can be partially embraced today.
My third book on "Things Celtic." Really enjoyed it.
