This book was confusing for me. My number one favorite genre is adult fairy tales, and I love anything that feels historical. This story should have been amazing. However, the regular and jarring editorial fails leech any fun out of it. Every few paragraphs some weird mistake pops up: the heroine is walking backward away from a dais and then suddenly reaches the fourth step up; "he had never before seen that before;" a person is described as being graceful with movement completely unlimited by the crystals, then next page he can barely move his shoulder because of the size of the crystal deformation. It's as if the author never once read her own work or even asked a friend to take a look. It's a real shame because this story had the potential to be great, but it reads like it was thrown together with little care or respect for the work of writing.
The first half of this series is absolutely awe-inspiring. If you're looking for an intriguing new take to the B&B retelling then you'll have surely found it in this. In my opinion this book gives you a taste of your most beloved B&B adaptations. When reading it I felt that it derived a little from the original tale, the Disney film, and the ACOTAR book to form itself into this fascinatingly original and awesome read of both lovely and enriching characters and a good unique blending of Irish mythology. Emma definitely put her heart into this one. With a journey that starts off in a desire to save her father and all the others in her village from an cruel plague that effects him and many others in her village you are given a good impression of Sorcha. She never wavers in her mission to save her father though she does lose some track of it when she meets this stories Beast and ends up on Hybrasil. Speaking of our stories Beast Eamonn, he's not much of a beast as he is a Fae king without his crown and kingdom who despite his attitude and unfortunate appearance has a good heart. Though his response to Sorchas arrival says less. Fate throws these two characters together in an interesting way. Their interactions with one another push the story along quiet nicely and so do the characters in the background. But fate is in it's own way cruel and tears them apart near the end only for Sorcha's return home to be a not to happy one. And in the end the book closes at a cliffhanger to where she must return to her king out of both need and want. This book will leave the reader wanting more like it did me. Also if you read it you'll notice scene that are reminiscent of scenes from a B&B adaption we all know and love.
This story, Heart of the Fae, has my heart completely and utterly. This was such a delightful story! If you love any rendition of the Beauty and the Beast story then this is a story you will absolutely love. Especially if you are fans of A Court of Thorns and Roses, because the main character of this story reminds me of a broody Tamlin. Except in this story Eamonn has been banished from his people for having a unique disfigurement.The Seelie fae are creatures who expect beauty to be perfection and when Eamonn was outed by his twin brother for being less than perfect he was slated for death. Turns out whenever Eamonn’s skin was sliced, scuffed, or pricked he would “bleed†crystals. Not very beautiful in the world of the fae. When the attempt to kill Eamonn was unsuccessful, he was banished from his kingdom to a prison island of sorts called Hy-brasil. For many years Eamonn had been alone with the exception of other fae who had also received a sentence of banishment.In the world of humans, Sorcha of Uà Néill had a most unusual upbringing. Taken in by the owner of a brothel after her mother had been burned at the stake as a witch, Sorcha had spent a better part of her life being midwife to her sisters and the women of the brothel. Her one dream in life was that she would be accepted into the healer profession and work her trade as a healer. Unfortunately, that was only a dream in the patriarchal society in which she lived. When a plague came to Uà Néill that had devastating consequences Sorcha had to implore the help of the fae in order to save her family.Sorcha knew that to make a deal with any fae was a terrible idea but she had no one else to turn to as she had already been ignored by the healer’s guild. All she wanted was a cure to the plague that was killing her father and countless others but in order to gather the information she needed she would have to go to the Hy-brasil and convince Eamonn, the stone king, to return with her to the land of man as payment for the deal she made with a fae. Seeing as he was a surly beast of a fae who did not even care if he lived or died, it did not seem possible that Sorcha was going to be able to convince him to help her but Sorcha was determined to make him listen to her.Eamonn had zero interest in Sorcha’s request to accompany her back to her homeland in order to help her find a cure. He could care less about mankind or anyone else. The only emotion that he knew was anger and that was all he cared about. Sorcha was determined to make Eamonn change his mind and refused to leave even though he had made it clear that she was unwelcome. With the passage of time Eamonn’s defenses to Sorcha began to crack and crumble but with war on the horizon, Eamonn had to keep his focus on his revenge. As time was ticking down Sorcha would have to attempt to change his mind by any means necessary even if it meant losing her heart in the process.Heart of the Fae is a unique retelling of the Beauty and the Beast tale and I loved it! I adored all of the creative twists that were applied throughout this story. The inclusion of both Seelie and Unseelie characters was wonderful as well as how Sorcha interacted with them while on the island of Hy-brasil. The romance was downright swoon worthy and the ending – major cliff hanger! Really added interest to this saga and I am definitely begging for the next book in the series! Wow, is all I have to say about this entire story! It was such a fast read for me and once finished, all I wanted to do was pick the story back up again and get lost between its covers. I am a fan of Heart of the Fae and I cannot implore you enough not to miss out on this gem of a story!This review is based on a complimentary book I received from Author, Emma Hamm.
