Great translation, but why does it only have excerpts not the whole chapter...Especially for Biographies of the Assassin-retainers, the stories of four assassins before Jing Ke was really important for the development on the entire plot, and they would also show how the roles of assassins have changed throughout many centuries before Qin united China which was really interesting...
The Han Dynasty was contempory with the Roman Empire. Like the Roman Empire, the Han Dynasty is remembered as a 'Golden Age' so I am glad to have this early history of this important period in Chinee history. Sima Qian only recounts the beginnings of the Han Dynasty. The rest of its 400 year rule is recorded by other historians.The names and titles are strange but human behaviour remains the same. I recommend doing some background reading before reading this.
Portrays China's history during the Warring States period in detail. It was 5 atates vieing for power and control with the state of Qin being the ultimate victor until their demise and the rise of the Han Dynasty.

Great gem of a book about a piece of history us Westerners know too little about.How can anyone understand China without this book?
Watson is one of the great translators of the last and present centuries. My only criticism comes when he clips a little from the original Chinese text. Come on Burton, that's just where a desperate grad student, or the instructor, needed help.
I purchased this book for a class I was taking. I can't stress enough how much of a lifesaver it was to find it here for this price. If I can help it, I will never purchase from the school bookstore again! Such a great price, and I enjoyed reading it.
Read this after reading about the Qin dynasty. Good book but i wish the maps would better illustrate the boundaries of the various kingdoms.
